Ann Hamilton at OCAD, photo Gareth Bate, 2007 |
Gareth Bate participates in Ann Hamilton's Listening Choir performance during Toronto's Nuit Blanche 2007.
Read Gareth's Review of the Listening Choir. OCAD Nomadic Residency Ann Hamilton’s work with textile media explores connections between visual art forms and language, including the spoken and written word, and human presence. Her work includes installations, photography, video, architecture, and performance. Hamilton’s installations are often of such magnitude that they require the assistance of many volunteers or sometimes even the expertise of engineers. A case in point is her 1999 installation whitecloth at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut, in which she altered the architectural structure of the space. In many instances, the assemblage of the work is an essential part of the piece itself. Hamilton earned an MFA in sculpture from the Yale University School of Art in 1985. In 1993, she was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship and in 1999 she was chosen to represent the United States at the 48th Venice Biennale. Hamilton’s lecture was a part of the Material Witness series, developed by the Textile Museum of Canada. |
