"Going from OCAD to 401 Richmond was inspiring," says Bate. "The studio helped me establish a daily practice and I've taken my painting and perfromance in a new and ambitious direction. What I want is to reinvigorate Canadian landscape painting in the face of 21st-century climate change and environmental destruciton." Bate says that "Lament," the series that emerged during his residency, is "a song of sorrow, an existential contemplation of our place within nature and our effect on the world."
